U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Charles His Law, age 28, of Ft. Thompson, appeared before U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on April 17, 2012, and pled guilty to an Information that charged him with Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years' imprisonment, a $250,000 fine or both.
The conviction stems from an incident during the early morning hours of November 3, 2011, when His Law became upset with the victim and began to assault her. The force of these blows knocked the victim to the ground, and the victim suffered serious bodily injury as a result of this assault.
The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Crow Creek Agency. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges.
A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for July 16, 2012. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing.
